ELEMMID 710   ADVANCED STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING MATHEMATICS   3 Units

This graduate course will develop the skills needed to teach mathematics with understanding to grade K-9 students. It focuses on enhancing specialized mathematics content knowledge and employing various pedagogical techniques suitable for contemporary classrooms with diverse student populations. Additionally, the course will aid in designing assessments for learning and differentiating instruction for all students.

ELEMMID 715   PRE-STUDENT TEACHING SEMINAR   1 Units

This course will reflect on students' pre-student teaching experiences in elementary and middle school settings. Discussions and writings on conflict resolution, the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning, as well as reflections on the application of critical pedagogy across diverse environments, will foster transformative growth as future educators.

ELEMMID 718   SOCIAL STUDIES AND FINE ARTS INTEGRATION IN THE CLASSROOM   3 Units

This graduate course develops the skills, procedures, and strategies for teaching social studies, including the integration of the arts and creativity. It is designed to deepen understanding of the nature and essential content areas of social studies, as well as the role of inquiry and arts integration in teaching the subject. Additionally, the course emphasizes an integrative approach to social studies that crosses disciplinary boundaries, connects past struggles to present issues, draws from various art forms, primary sources, and students' own lives, and requires the effective use of reading, writing, and technology skills.

ELEMMID 719   STUDENT TEACHING SEMINAR   1 Units

Students today come to school with wide-ranging backgrounds and experiences, many of which impact their performance at school. This course seeks to equip teachers with skills to create classroom and school environments where all students feel safe and supported. Teachers must prepare inclusive instruction and culturally responsive practices to provide students with multicultural knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

ELEMMID 722   TEACHING CLIMATE CHANGE AND NATURAL RESOURCES   1 Units

This course is designed to fulfill the WI DPI environmental education requirement. Conservation issues and phenomena are explored within the framework of teaching climate change with information drawn from many scientific disciplines. We consider current and future phenomena, impacts on organisms interconnected in ecosystems and our natural resources, and potential solutions for mitigation. Fundamental knowledge, strategies, and tools teachers may use to empower students are explored.

ELEMMID 724   ADVANCED STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING SCIENCE   3 Units

This course considers a variety of instructional models, approaches, strategies, and tools to support students' (grades K - 9) learning of science and engineering guided by state and national science education standards. Course participants develop their visions of ambitious and equitable learning environments that promote generative learning, safety, and accessibility.

ELEMMID 762   INTRODUCTION TO EQUITY AND TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION   3 Units

This course aims to prepare students to integrate technology into curriculum and instruction, as well as to understand and teach in school settings with diverse populations. The major topics of the course include the application of digital tools, the integration of technology into learning, the experiences of diverse pupils, and the role of teachers in establishing an equitable learning environment by leveraging multicultural children's literature and various technologies. Students will also apply digital tools to enrich teaching practices, reflect on their pedagogical decisions, critically analyze how technology integration may impact learning, and foster the responsible and ethical use of technology.

ELEMMID 765   THEORY AND PRACTICE OF WORKING WITH MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS   3 Units

This course explores the social, cultural, and educational issues connected to the experiences in schools of youth who are being raised in families and communities where languages other than English are commonly spoken. Some of these issues are: translanguaging (multilingual) teaching and learning, multicultural education, politics of language education and policy in the US; race, racism, and discrimination in schooling; design and implementation of BE and ESL programs; theories of language acquisition; methods for teaching BE/ESL; social contexts of schooling; the roles of culture and families, and more.
