EDU 201   CONCEPTS, ISSUES, AND FIELD EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION   3 Units

Classroom discussion (two hours per week) of educational principles, concepts, and issues related to student-teacher-school-community interactions, including developmental aspects, sociocultural influences, and human relations. Off-campus experience involving active participation in the program at an educational institution (four hours per week of off-campus experience will usually be required, but the number may vary with current DPI and 4-year campus requirements).

EDU 202   PERSONAL PORTFOLIO PREPARATION FOR EDUCATION MAJOR   1 Units

Personal Portfolio Preparation for Education Majors: Provides direct instruction on professional portfolio preparation for Education majors seeking admission to professional schools of education at a baccalaureate institution. Consistent with the particular requirements for Admission I status, the course provides the opportunity for successful admission to the transfer student.

EDU 220   EDUCATION IN A PLURALISTIC SOCIETY   3 Units

This course is designed to prepare students to be competent teachers in a pluralistic society. Current theory and research on the major issues confronting educators in a pluralistic society will be explored: immigration, poverty, issues particular to Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans and other culture/ethnic groups, exceptionality, sexual orientation, religion and other special interest groups. Students in this course will have contact with students, colleagues, parents, and agencies representing different cultures, ethnicities and alternative lifestyles. The knowledge base and rationale for this course is specified in the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction PI 34.15 (4) and s 118.19 statutory.

EDU 230   EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY   3 Units

A study of the developmental process in children in the context of psychological principles of teaching and learning. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development of children and adolescents. Attention will be directed toward the nature and conditions of learning, including the major types of learning, critical aspects of learning, and the problems encountered in fostering and directing learning.

EDU 265   WOMEN AND EDUCATION   3 Units

An introduction to the theories and practices of educating girls and women. Traditional and feminist perspectives on developmental models of learning, early childhood through adult education, curricular issues, and feminist pedagogy will be studied and critiqued.

EDU 283   LITERATURE FOR CHILDREN   3 Units

Folk Lit. including the fairy tale, fable, myth, epic, & tall tales. Emphasison modern fanciful & realistic fiction, traditional & modern poetry, & ways of presenting Lit. to children.

EDU 300   THE EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL   3 Units

This course will prepare students to understand and work with individuals with disabilities within schools by providing accurate information about disabilities and current best practices in education. Emphasis will be on understanding historical, legal, and philosophical frameworks; defining categories of disability; describing legal and ethical perspectives; how issues of accessibility in educational and social arenas affect people with disabilities; learning the role disability plays in the lives of families; becoming familiar with label criteria for disabilities; and the examination of how the referral/placement processes can discriminate against marginalized populations. Recommended: EDU 201 and (PSY 250 or PSY 360).

EDU 303   TEACHING TECHNIQUES FOR YOUNG LEARNERS   3 Units

This course will examine the characteristics of the young learner (four- six years of age) from a whole-child perspective with emphasis on children’s physical, language, and cognitive development and needs. Learning theories as applied to this age range will be explored, developmentally appropriate curricula in all content areas will be developed with the deliberate integration of intentional play, expressive arts, social-emotional learning, diversity, and authentic assessment.

EDU 305   INTEGRATED LITERACY AND LITERATURE   5 Units

This course will focus on developing proficiency in the science and art of teaching literacy (language arts and reading) within an authentic setting. This course will include a pre-student teaching experience. Major concepts and processes that are central to understanding literacy/language arts development will be covered. There will be an emphasis on new literacies, mentor texts, technologies, and children’s literature integration. The critical role of teachers in fostering literacy learning will integrate the six language arts strands (reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, and technologies) as well as the pillars of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).

EDU 403   TEACHING TECHNIQUES FOR MIDDLE LEARNERS   3 Units

The course is designed to prepare students to teach the young adolescent (ages 10-16/grades 6-9). Its purpose is to help teacher certification candidates understand the developmental characteristics of the young adolescent and select/plan developmentally appropriate instruction/curriculum/learning environments that are responsive to their emotional, social, physical, moral and intellectual needs.

EDU 404   INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES METHODS   4 Units

Students will examine the currently accepted goals and standards of science, social studies, and environmental education in elementary and middle schools. Students will develop their pedagogical knowledge in inquiry teaching approaches, with a focus on similarities between teaching science and social studies, and an understanding of what makes each discipline unique at different grade levels. The course will also assess students' understanding of statutory requirements for licensure related to environmental education and conservation in Wisconsin.
